Dr. Ernest Moniz

Dr. Moniz is currently Co-Head of the MIT Energy Initiative and Professor of Physics at MIT. From October 1997 until January 2001, Dr. Moniz served as Under Secretary of the Department of Energy advising the Secretary and overseeing the U.S. Department of Energy’s $7 billion research and development portfolio (energy and environmental technologies, national security, and fundamental science) as well as the national laboratory system. Prior to joining the DOE, Dr. Moniz was head of the Department of Physics at MIT, served as the Associate Director for Science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President, and served as the Director of the Bates Linear Accelerator Center. His principal research interests are in theoretical nuclear physics. Dr. Moniz has served numerous universities, national laboratories, professional societies, and government agencies in advisory roles. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society and also serves on the technology advisory board of BP (formerly British Petroleum).
